5s Methodology – Kaizen
The 5S methodology carries this name because it consists of actions represented by five Japanese words that begin with the letter S. Each word has a significant meaning for the establishment of dignified and secure place to work. These five words are:

  • Seiri (Sorting)
  • Seiton (Stabilizing)
  • Seiso (Shining)
  • Seiketsu (Standardizing)
  • Shitsuke (Sustaining)

Nowadays this model is applied in organizations all over the world demonstrating amazing results. Meanwhile, Business Excellence Chile has pioneered the implementation of this methodology in Chile in both public and private sectors. Some of the organizations that have succeeded in this challenge are the Municipality of Providencia, Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi, EMSA-Codelco and Kutralwe Kindergarten.

Interview with Antonio Bonani

How does the 5s Program contribute to the Tunnel development?

We have been implementing the 5s program since the second half of 2011, and it has undoubtedly been a very strong and effective complement to our daily work, considering its simplicity.

“Sort, Organize, Clean, Standardize and Discipline” are familiar terms that run every day without thinking they are part of a program, but when you get people to focus their efforts on these, you can get great benefits. Among them I can mention greater security, orderly, pleasant environment to work, and mainly, satisfaction in people who notice improvements in the results of their work without having to spend more time than necessary for their occupation.

What importance is assigned to security, within the priorities of the Tunnel?

Safety in the tunnel is not about priorities, it is the only way to run our activities in order to achieve our goals as a team and as individuals. Everything that affects the health of our people, especially the accidents are always extremely regrettable events, these are experiences no one wants to have to go through, and when they occur they have a major impact on our entire family and social environment. For this reason, when performing risky activities, the understanding of a proactive vision of security, is a seal that should permeate everyone, and this is the responsibility of the leaders.
